Reflexology Massage

reflexology massage

Gentle pressure on reflex points send signals to other parts of the body to relax and improve circulation.

A safe, and relaxing modality, reflexology has been part of many traditional health care systems for centuries.

Reflexology works on the reflex points in the hands, feet, and ears that correspond to different parts of the body. The practitioner applies pressure using thumb-walking techniques to the reflexes, depending on what condition is being treated.

At Bexley Acupuncture, reflexology is combined with acupuncture or other therapies to optimize the treatments. Simple self-care instructions may be discussed at the completion of the session. Several studies funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, and enhance relaxation and sleep.

Similar to acupuncture, scientific explanation for how reflexology works may be that the pressure sends signals to balance the nervous system or release chemicals such as endorphins that reduce pain and stress.

Some conditions that benefit from Reflexology include:

  • Stress, anxiety disorders
  • Tension Headaches
  • Digestive disorders (diarrhea, constipation, epigastric pain, etc.)
  • Insomnia
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Back pain
  • Neuropathy of the legs, feet and hands

You should be completely comfortable during a reflexology session. If some areas are more tender or sore, the practitioner may spend extra time on these points with gently applied pressure.

I combine reflexology in my acupuncture practice for optimum health benefits!
