What is Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy?
All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. We are all capable of entering the ‘trance-like’ state without much work.
We move back and forth between the two portions of the mind throughout the day, about 80% of the time, in fact. Without knowing, we self-hypnotize, and live in the state of ‘trance’ for much of the day (90% of the mind). But the mind knows to return to the conscious 10% when needed.
If you wonder if this happens to you, you can think back to a time when you drove some place, and arrived without remembering how you got there. Or how about a time when you were in the middle of a conversation with someone, and had no clue what they were talking about? You were in the 90% subconscious part of your mind during those times; you were in a ‘trance’!
When hypnosis is performed by a professional, it is a method of relaxation with specific intentions. It is, what I call, a directed, intentional, guided meditation. You are relaxed, and fully conscious, but because you are in a more suggestible state, changes can be made to shift negative patterns. The clinician can provide posthypnotic suggestions for relief from symptoms, (or addictions) whether it’s for psychological (anxiety) or physical (pain). Only a light to medium state of hypnotic trance is necessary for effective therapy.
Hypnotherapy is a process of psychotherapy with a client who is in the hypnotic altered state of consciousness. The patient is placed in a hypnotic, altered state of consciousness for the purpose of reworking or re-framing unhealthy behaviors.
Heart-centered hypnotherapy* is a specific form of hypnotherapy that includes regression therapy which allows for deeper healing to take place. The purpose of this type of hypnosis is to re-work and re-frame the subconscious from past events, as well as to help the patients release their repressed emotions which is a powerful form of healing.

Wellness applications for hypnosis & hypnotherapy
Because being in a hypnotic state allows patients to be more open to discussion and suggestion, hypnosis/ hypnotherapy can be very helpful for these conditions:
- Depression/ Anxiety
- Sleep disturbance
- Chronic pain
- Weight management
- Smoking cessation
Understanding when it is appropriate
Hypnosis and hypnotherapy is not for everyone. It might not be appropriate for people with psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions, or for someone who is using drugs or alcohol. It also should not be used for people with serious medical conditions.
Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool to eliminate conscious roadblocks that can complicate your desire for change and creating new healthy habits. By eliminating this clutter, you gain a deeper understanding of your true desires to ease moving forward with positive life changes.
What to expect during a hypnosis/ hypnotherapy session?
You will be completely conscious and in control of your surroundings. You will remember everything that happens, and are able to stop the session at anytime if you feel uncomfortable.
You should be relaxed, and comfortable. The practitioner will guide you to a very relaxed state of being where your mind is free to wander. If regression work is needed, you will be guided to some previous memories of your earlier self. Any emotions, feelings or stories that come up are encouraged to surface and release as that is part of the healing. You and the practitioner will agree on new conclusions and suggestions so that you can begin your healing, and move on from what has been bothering you, physically or psychologically, or both.

TRANSFORM, a weight release program offered at Bexley Acupuncture
I am so excited to bring this effective weight release program to my community! It incorporates a crossover of many of my practices, of which hypnosis is a valuable component.
TRANSFORM combines acupressure and hypnosis with the protocol from Trim-Life®, a weight release program founded by Diane Zimberoff, the Wellness Institute’s cofounder.
The TRIM-LIFE® Program is specifically designed for people who have tried many diet programs and have discovered that diets don’t work. TRIM-LIFE® is taught by Wellness Institute graduates of the Six-Day Hypnotherapy Certification Training, a prerequisite for becoming a TRIM-LIFE Provider.
